Do you want to improve your performance, build muscle or get leaner? In order to do that, you think you need to workout.
Wrong! You don’t need to workout, you need to train! There’s a huge difference.
Have you ever seen someone walk into the gym, shrug out their shoulders, clap themselves on the back a few times and go straight into their workout? They’ll start off doing some bicep curls, then they’ll walk down to the cable machine and do some tricep pushdowns. On the way back down to do more bicep curls, they’ll see a chest press machine they like the look of so they do a few reps of that. Then, at the end of their workout, they’ll grab a bench and do 1-2 sets of a BB Bench Press. They’ll then finish off their session with some cable fly’s and maybe one more set of tricep pushdowns so they get a good ‘pump.’ That is the definition of working out. We’ve all seen someone train like that.
I know the difference between working out and training because I spent a full year in college working out instead of training! Everything was done randomly and off the cuff. No two days were the same. Nothing was built upon. I saw some results at the start (which most people do) because it was a new stimulus to my body (this happens to everyone who starts working out for the first time) but then everything levelled out for about a year. No progress, no improvement.
I stopped seeing the results I wanted. But thankfully, I didn't get disheartened, which a lot of people do. It's easy to say things like ‘I’m different’, ‘the gym doesn’t work’ or ‘I can’t lose weight yet I’ve tried everything’ and give up.
What you need to realise is that you're no different to everyone else and you CAN get the results you desire. You just need to TRAIN properly and not workout.
Training is effective, it is planned and it is precise. Exercises are carefully selected and variables such as rep ranges, number of sets, rest periods, progressive overload and tempo are all precisely considered. Training means going to the gym with a plan and purpose and knowing exactly what you need to do each day.
It wasn't until I got a program off a coach in 3rd year that I started seeing some real results and understood how to train properly. I could’ve been over one year ahead of myself had I started training earlier but that’s a lesson that I’ve learned.
Don’t make the same mistake as me and waste over a year of your life working out. Follow a proven plan and TRAIN.
